A  (apparatus and maternal practice)

a transversal investigation 2021

In the wake of the recent upheavals in the organization of biopolitics and social reproduction, motherhood has become the focal point of many political discussions in Poland and beyond. Rising from that sociopolitical context, my research focuses on the figure of a contemporary working mother-artist, examining the relation between the private and the political.

The transversal (from Latin transversus, from trans-vertere: to turn accross), methodology gives an opportunity to move not only between disciplines, but also between theory and practice. The work derives from historical documents and areas of knowledge related to fiction and imagination. The revelation of new meanings and relationships between issues can take place here against linear arrangements on the timeline; past and present, concepts of old and new.

The ceramic objects included in the work refer to representations of the genitals as reproductive apparatuses, which already on the level language itself evokes interesting connotations with the issues of photography.

„A” (embryos) – three objects made from dark clay with multi-colour glazing. These forms were inspired by the morphology of plant embryos and seeds. Private collection.

„A” (votives ) – five objects made in pale clay, unglazed. They are reproductions of ceramic votive sculptures related to fertility protection, dating from ancient Roman sites from the 4th to 2nd century BC.

„A” (ambi) – eight objects made of light clay, unglazed. These works are based on a schematic diagram of
the external genitalia during the undifferentiated period.
