rivalia

objects and photographs, 2024

„Rivalia” is a multi-faceted artistic research project that takes as its starting point the question of the flow of water through the city. It is based on a collection of selected cultural texts and material evidence – archaeological material, old maps and urban plans.

The first part of the project was created during an artistic residency in Prague. It consists of a series of handmade ceramic tiles decorated with images found in the appendix of a XIX century map of Prague. Each tile measures 8×13 cm and represents a type of urban landscape, including different types of vegetation, crops and water reservoirs. The tiles were mounted on an OSB board around an old water tap.

The second part of the project relates to the waterways around the Gulf of Gdansk. This part – called „Outlet C” – is a ceramic installation based on the map of Sopot. Outlet C is an element of the system of water drainage from the Sopot area into the Gulf of Gdañsk – it includes the streams Kuźniczy, Gradowy, Babidolski and Kamienny. Most of these streams are underground, with only relatively short stretches coming to the surface for recreational purposes. „Wylot C” was created as part of the KPO for Culture grant for 2024 in cooperation with the Department of Hydrology at the University of Gdansk. #nextgenerationeu #kpodlakultury

The final element of the project is a series of pinhole photographs showing river regulation points in the city – including water thresholds or canalised riverbeds. The long exposure time of the photographs emphasises the relationship between static architecture and the dynamics of flowing water.

Selected elements of 'Rivalia’ were presented during an exhibition with Barbora Fastrova at the Goyki 3 Art Incubator in Sopot in 2024.
